General rule of thumb in measuring for a chandelier is as follows:
(Of course there are always exceptions to the rule!)

The width of a chandelier over a dining room table should be approximately 1/2 to 3/4 the width of the table. The height off of the table should be approximately 30” to the bottom of the lowest point on the chandelier, or 34-38” from the tabletop to the candle cup (bobeche).

If you would like to put a chandelier in the center of a room, the rule of thumb is Room Length plus Room Width (in feet) equals chandelier diameter (in inches).
For example…If your room is 10 feet by 10 feet, shop for chandelier with a diameter of about 20 inches (10 + 10 = 20).
